Nutrients are chemical substances that living organisms use to sustain themselves. The nutrients themselves are not living. Proteins, minerals, carbohydrates, and elements such as nitrogen and phosphorus are examples of nutrients. How many nutrients are available for life affects how life does or does not thrive and grow.
