Welcome to Week 1 of Earth Systems. Although a lot of this course will be about Earth specifically, we are going to start out with something a little bit bigger - the entire universe. The universe is all the matter in the universe, from the smallest piece of dirt to all the galaxies we know about (and many we don't).

So how did the universe get here? We'll answer that question and some others you might not have thought of this week.

You will have a lab assignment in this week of the course. Here is a list of materials you should obtain, in order to complete the assignment 'Our Universe is Ballooning', found at the end of Week 1:
  • 1 balloon
  • 1 piece of string/yarn (can also substitute dental floss or a shoelace - whatever you have available)
  • 1 ruler
  • 1 marker
