The classification system used in the biological sciences is called Linnaean classification. The Linnaean classification is as follows (from largest to smallest grouping):

Domain -> Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species.

Here is an example of how one species of algae is classified:
