Stoichiometry Exploration Discussion.

Below is a picture of 4 test tubes. Each one contains the products of the reaction between 0.1 M CuCl2 and 0.1 M Na3PO4, but each one had a different ratio of the solutions added.

copper phospate

Here is a table that shows what was added to each (A - D) from left to right.

Volume of Na3PO4 Added (mL)

Topics for discussion:

  • What is the balanced reaction?
  • What is the blue product?
  • Why does test tube C have the most? Does it have anything to do with the reaction?
  • Why do test tubes A and B have colorless solutions above the blue precipitate, C is slightly blue and D is more so?
  • Why doesn't A have the least amount of precipitate?
