    Advanced Placement Biology

AP Biology is a yearlong course that is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology course. We work towards one goal in AP Biology; passing the AP Biology exam with a 3, 4, or 5 to earn college credits.

The main content of the course is organized below into twelve boxes, one for each unit. On the left you will find more boxes.

    • Section Links - a place to quickly jump to a unit box
    • Google Calendar - listing class work and homework. The Agenda view is the easiest way to print assignments, but be sure to select the relevant pages. If you don't need the calendar, you can minimize this large box using the minus sign in the upper right. You can use your mypanthers account to subscribe to the calendar and to send yourself email or text message reminders of homework.
    • "Like Wiki" Glossary Vocab word of the Day - add new glossary words or edit existing ones
    • Administration - where you can edit your profile

    Topic 1

    Unit 1: Chemistry of Life

This unit begins a the lowest level, that of atoms. You will learn about molecules the are essential for life, water and the macromolecules. To understand these you must remember some basic chemistry and learn about the properties of carbon that make it the backbone of life's chemistry. You will delve more deeply into proteins, as they build and run all living things. Specifically you will study enzymes, completing an inquiry on the enzyme catalase during class. Finally you will explore the characteristics that make life living and discover why viruses are covered in this unit on chemistry.

Aside from the content, you will begin learning new skills here. You must learn to read a college level textbook, write up a scientific report, memorize vocabulary, and write an answer to a free response question.

The lessons are below. Some have assignments to turn in, some do not. Do them in order. You may also see quizzes along the way - do them in the order you reach them. You will only get one attempt at these quizzes.

Finally, after the lessons, is the night before forum. Here you can post questions about assignments or content the night before it is due and hope someone else is online to help you out. If it is not the night before, I suggest you ask your question in class.

Begin with Lesson 0 if you need a review of chemistry, Lesson 1 if you already understand atoms, molecules, bonds and temperature. Do the items in list one after the other.

    • Lesson 0 - Chemistry review
    • Lesson 1 - Scientific Inquiry
    • Formative Reading 2 Quiz - Complete reading 2 notes, use only them to take quiz before moving on to next lesson.
    • Lesson 2 - Water
    • Lesson 3 - Carbon and functional groups
    • Lesson 4 - Macromolecules
    • Lesson 5 - Thermodynamics
    • Summative Reading 6 Quiz - Use only the notes you took and complete this before moving on.
    • Lesson 6 - Enzymes
    • Lesson 7 - Viruses
