Road Trippin'
In this course you will be planning the ultimate road trip!
Your trip plans will have you go across the continental United States starting on one coast and ending at the other. Along the way you will be keeping track of your mileage and stopping to visit some Engineering Marvels.
No need to pack your bags for the trip. Just fire up your computers and away you go!
To play this game, you will have to enter your first name, choose the States and Provinces game, and choose the United States when it asks which country you want to use.
Glossary
This glossary will become a resource of famous places and sights to see in the continental United States.
Oh the places you'll go!
The first decision you will have to make is which coast you want to begin on. While you ponder that, we'll first have you tell everyone where you will be coming from before you head out to start your journey.
Activity: Create your own Google Earth tour. Start with showing us what city you currently live in. This will give you practice with creating a place mark. When you are finished, upload the KMZ file below.
Activity: Now it is time to create your road trip. Start by putting place marks in the cities you are going to stop in along the way. You should have 10-15 cities on your itinerary and make sure to include a picture in the properties of your place mark. When you are done, upload your KMZ file.
Staying on the Grid
Now it is time get some facts about your journey. You will create a spreadsheet on Google Docs that shows some details about the navigation for your trip.
Make sure to place the spreadsheet in our Homeroom Collections for everyone to see.
The first details you are to include are the latitude and longitude locations of your stops on your trips. This is available in the properties of your place mark.
Click on the link below to play a game that will help you get better at using Latitude and Longitude.
How do you get where you need to go?
Next you will need to figure out which roads to take. Use the Directions tab in GoogleEarth to determine which roads you will drive on and make a list in the third column of your spreadsheet. Make sure to include lables like Interstate when needed.
When you are done entering your directions, respond to the forum below.
For your next adventure, you will click on the Engineering Wonders link below to learn about some engineered structures. These are some of the structures chosen by the American Society of Civil Engineers as some of the "Wonders of the Modern World."
Make the Marvels
Come to Life
Now that you have researched the Engineering Marvels you plan to see....you are going to make them come to life.
If the Hoover Dam could introduce itself....what do you think it would have to say?
Final Assessment
Your final project is going to be a video presentation of what you have learned. You will create a Vuvox Video Collage that shows the following things:
1. Pictures of the cities you are stopping in.
2. Pictures of the Engineering Marvel you are going to see.
3. One fact about each city and Engineering Marvel.
4. At the end.....the total number of miles you traveled.
You can choose any school appropriate music you would like to accompany the video.
When the video is done, post the link to the forum below for everyone to see it.
